About this asset

⚡ Procedural Lightning VFX Pack

Add dynamic, stylized lightning to your Unity projects — a collection of procedurally generated, randomized lightning effects built entirely from Unity Particle Systems.

No sprite sheets, no flipbooks, no Shader Graph, no third-party dependencies. Every bolt is drawn procedurally from a noise-displaced particle trail, so no two strikes are ever identical.

Each strike hits fast and then decays slowly, with the whole fork structure dimming together the way a real bolt leaves an afterimage.

⚠️ Requires the Universal Render Pipeline (URP). Bloom is needed for the glow — a volume profile with the demo's settings is included.

✨ Features

  • ⚡ Procedural lightning generation — no baked animation
  • 🎲 Randomized shapes and branching on every strike
  • 💫 Fast strike, slow natural decay
  • 🔗 Multi-target chaining — link a bolt across any number of points, editable at runtime
  • 🌩️ Trigger-driven branching you can extend yourself
  • 🎨 Fully customizable colors, scale, noise and timing
  • 🪶 Low particle counts, no real-time lights, no shadows
  • 🧩 One material and one 64×64 texture for the entire pack
  • 🚫 No sprite sheets · 🚫 No Shader Graph · 🚫 No plugins

Included Effects — 6 effects, 8 drop-in prefabs

• Branching Lightning Bolt
Vertical bolt with randomized branching and shape variation.

• Heavy Lightning Bolt
A thicker, multi-strand version for bigger moments.

• Lightning Strike
A ground strike that splits into two further generations of branches. Included in both quick and slow-decay timings.

• Ground Impact Strike
The same strike plus a red impact flash and secondary sparks where it lands. Also in both timings.

• Radial Electric Burst
A core that electrifies outwards in all directions. The cheapest effect in the pack.

• Lightning Arc & Multi-Target Chain
A procedural electrical connection between two points, and a component that chains it across any number of targets in order, with an optional closed loop. Suitable for energy links, traps, abilities, machines and force fields.

🎮 Great For

Weather and storm systems · Magic abilities · Electrical attacks · Energy weapons · Force fields · Electrical machines · Environmental hazards · Boss abilities · Sci-fi environments · Fantasy games · Stylized VFX

📄 Documentation and a demo scene showing all six effects are included. All code is under the LightningVFX namespace.

Technical details

🔧

  • 6 lightning effects, shipped as 8 drop-in prefabs
  • Both ground strikes come in two timings — quick, and slow-decay
  • Built entirely with Unity Particle Systems — no third-party plugins or dependencies
  • Universal Render Pipeline (URP)
  • No Shader Graph and no custom shaders — stock URP Particles/Unlit
  • Procedural noise-driven bolt paths — no baked animation, no flipbooks, no sprite sheets
  • Randomized every strike — no two bolts identical
  • Fast strike with a slow, natural decay — the whole fork structure dims together
  • One 64×64 texture and a single bolt material for every effect
  • Trail-based geometry — most emitters run at Max Particles 1
  • No real-time lights, no shadows, no light probe sampling
  • Trigger-driven branching, up to 4 generations deep out of the box
  • Add more branch points by dropping extra plane colliders into the Trigger module
  • Force-field terminated strikes land on a fixed point every time
  • Multi-target chaining across any number of targets, editable at runtime
  • Optional closed-loop chaining
  • Constant-thickness mode for long-distance arcs
  • Live preview in the editor without entering Play Mode
  • Fully exposed particle settings — colors, scale, noise, lifetimes, branch positions
  • All code under the LightningVFX namespace — no collisions with your project
  • Drag-and-drop prefabs
  • Demo scene and documentation included

Compatibility

Render pipelines supported in each Unity version
Unity version Built-in URP HDRP
2022.3.54f1 Not listed Compatible Not listed

URP only — built and tested on URP 14.0.11 (Unity 2022.3). Needs HDR, Post Processing on your camera, and a Volume with Bloom; a profile is included. Not supported on Built-in/HDRP out of the box, but there are no custom shaders — just swap the bolt material and use your pipeline's bloom.
