About this asset

Retro PSX Stack recreates the 90s console look as a full stack rather than a single shader, because the look is not one effect. It is low render resolution, unstable geometry, warped textures and a limited palette all happening at once, and missing any one of them is why most attempts land somewhere between "modern game with a filter" and nothing at all.

Every layer is independent and every parameter is exposed. Use the whole stack for a period-accurate PS1 game, or take one piece on its own - just the fog, just the resolution controller - and the rest of your setup is untouched. Values that would mean editing a shader elsewhere are sliders here: snap grid size, affine warp amount, palette levels, dither strength, fog height, density and drift, and render height anywhere from 120p to native.

It suits retro horror above all, where a low resolution hides exactly what a flashlight should not reveal, but the same controls dial all the way down to a subtle grain for stylised shooters, PSX-flavoured racing, dream sequences, or a single flashback level inside an otherwise modern game.

It works with whatever art you already have. The grade, fog and resolution passes are full-screen and need no changes to your meshes or materials. The PSXLit shader is optional, for when you want vertex snapping and affine warping on specific objects rather than everywhere.

Includes a demo scene built entirely from primitives and procedural textures, a preconfigured URP Asset and Renderer so the effects are visible the moment you open it, an F9 live tuning panel, and full documentation with recommended values. No third-party content and no external dependencies.

Technical details

VFX INCLUDED (3 effects, 4 custom shaders)

• Retro Grade - full-screen renderer feature: 8x8 ordered dithering, palette quantisation, shadow/highlight duotone, black crush, desaturation. Runs after post-processing so nothing blurs the dither pattern away.

• Ground Fog - full-screen renderer feature: screen-space height fog reconstructed from depth with drifting procedural noise. Runs before post-processing so it grades and blooms with the scene.

• Retro Resolution Controller - camera effect: renders at a low resolution and point-upscales, with optional 4:3 aspect lock and letterboxing, adjustable at runtime.

• Lamp Glow - additive billboard light halos built entirely in the vertex shader, GPU instanced, with a component that writes only when brightness changes.

CUSTOM SHADERS

• PSXLit - vertex snapping to a configurable grid, per-vertex lighting, true affine texture mapping with a 0-1 blend. Forward and Forward+, SRP Batcher compatible.

• RetroGrade, GroundFog, LampGlow - one shader per effect above.

TEXTURES

• 8 demo textures at 128x128 and 64x64, all generated procedurally. The effects themselves use no textures and ship no texture data.

TECHNICAL

• Built on the URP RenderGraph API. Unity 6000.0+, URP 17+. Not compatible with Built-in RP or HDRP.

• Per-camera filtering on both full-screen effects (main camera only, all game cameras, explicit list, or exclude list) so secondary cameras rendering to a RenderTexture stay clean.

• F9 runtime tuning panel with every parameter as a slider. No input package dependency, works on either input backend.

• Assembly definitions for Runtime and Demo. The Demo folder can be deleted entirely.

• Demo scene: 128 renderers, all Unity primitives.

• No external dependencies, no third-party content, zero compile errors and no deprecated API warnings.

Compatibility

Render pipelines supported in each Unity version
Unity version Built-in URP HDRP
6000.5.0f1 Not listed Compatible Not listed

Unity 6000.0+ with URP 17+. Retro Grade and Ground Fog are Scriptable Renderer Features built on the RenderGraph API, which does not exist in earlier URP versions. Built-in RP and HDRP are not supported. Ground Fog needs Depth Texture enabled on the URP Asset (on by default). Works with Forward and Forward+. A preconfigured URP Asset and Renderer ship with the demo scene.
