Design. Create. Build. Play. Share.

Pixel Dungeon Dojo is an essential tutorial project and framework for a casual 2D pixel art arcade game, where you get to make endless fantasy dungeon levels to share with friends. The level designer is YOU. (your name even appears in the credits)

Make levels easily, experiment with level design, share the game featuring your own levels.

  • Snap and Build: make levels easily, with tools that help and guide you
  • Puzzles, Traps and Monsters: characters, items, and dynamics to make fun gameplay
  • Design Depth: make complex trigger systems with modular tools or extend with custom art or animation

Anyone can learn Unity faster by working with the Pixel Dungeon Dojo, a safe place to practice your level designs.

While placing dungeon tiles, placing monsters and hazards, hiding items and treasure, configuring levers and doors, you are learning Unity in a cozy way, where you do not need experience or knowledge with the engine. The Dojo Tools provide guidance, tips and helpful error correction as you work in the editor. It's like Unity Level Design with training wheels.

For seasoned designers, the Pixel Dungeon Dojo takes the technical and tedium out of the way, so you can just create ... very quickly. Your practice becomes better with time, with experimentation and with the insight that comes from rapid cycles of playtesting and feedback.

It's somehow deep and cozy, all at once.

Tools in the editor help to configure your project, organize your levels and provide tips on proper Level Design. The provided Pixel Dungeon Dojo Level Design Guidebook begins with a comprehensive overview and quick start guide, has all the Dojo level elements defined, and follows up with best practices of Level Design and tips on how to extend with your own custom elements.

Pixel Dungeon Dojo serves up the artwork, audio, combat system, characters, props and dynamic components so that you can focus on making dungeon levels that are fun, challenging and surprising for players.

Side Note: This tutorial project provides a comfortable place to focus on 2D dungeon-crawling Level Design. It comes with all one needs to make exciting levels, but also allows for custom code to extend the experience. And, for a complete no-code solution to extend Pixel Dungeon Dojo gameplay, please go check out The Adventure Toolkit. :)

Have fun!
