About this asset

The topographic map generator is a tool for procedurally generating topographic map textures. It can generate contour lines, lake basins, rivers with branching, elevation bands, and latitude and longitude map lines, all common elements of real maps.

As a nice addition, it can also generate starfield textures, useful for generating sky textures with random stars.

The topographic map generator can produce:

  • Contour (height) lines
  • Latitude/longitude grid lines (minor and major)
  • Elevation bands for woods, snow, sand, as you set it
  • Lakes and water basins
  • Rivers with branching
  • Starfields for sci-fi skies and space backgrounds

You can customize map generation in various ways to obtain realistic or stylized maps. This can be used for map textures for 2D objects in both 2D and 3D games. It's especially useful in roguelike or roguelite games, where a different map is generated with each playthrough (I use this tool my own roguelike project).

It is very simple to use. You can use it in a standalone way in the unity editor, just set the options, press generate, and that's it!

Or you can use within a game using simple to use callable functions. The functions pull the configuration from a configurator you can use in the editor, and in the preview mode you can iterate many times to ensure you are generating exactly what you need once the game is running.

The configurator comes with 6 ready-made presets that will help you to start fast in your project. Then you can save your preferred configuration as your own preset to be used in the future.

Technical details

These are the main features:

  • Runtime generation via a single static method call
  • Generation and tweaking in the editor
  • You can set the random seed to reproduce previous results (...or to tweak a generation that went really well)
  • Radial gradients on any color in the map
  • Deep customization of colors, line widths, and anti-aliasing to smooth the lines
  • Configurable image resolution and stretching to match your game
  • 6 ready-made presets (G Maps, Sci-fi Topo, Star Sky, Classic, Dark, Clear)
  • ... or you can also make your own presets

This generator has zero third-party dependencies, only UnityEngine referenced. It works with 100% procedural generation (no LLM involved in the generation process). The produced images are license-clean and fully under your control.
