Lumen: Stylized Light FX 2

Bring your scenes to life with glowing flares, sweeping god rays, and dynamic lighting that feels real, looks magical, and runs fast. Lumen 2 is a complete stylized lighting toolkit built for performance, beauty, and ease of use, designed for artists and developers who want the look of volumetrics without the overhead.

Inspired by lighting tricks seen in games like Genshin Impact, Overland, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and Alto's Adventure, Lumen 2 gives you access to powerful mesh-based lighting systems that capture the mood and direction of volumetric lighting with a fraction of the cost. Whether you're developing a cozy platformer, a mysterious horror title, or a colorful RPG, Lumen makes your lighting stand out from the competition.

Four Stylized Lighting Systems

Light Flares

Add warmth, focus, and energy to your scenes. These glows and halos simulate the effect of volumetric point lights and can be used to accent lanterns, torches, magic orbs, and more. Crank them up for glowing auras or use them subtly to soften your lighting.

Static Rays

Perfect for iconic sunshafts, god rays, or spotlight cones. These mesh rays are ideal for both 2D and 3D games, allowing you to place light directionally in the world to lead the player’s eye or fill a scene with ambient drama.

Dynamic Rays

Use vertex colors and a custom shader system to animate and orient your rays in real time. These are great for tracking day-night cycles, faking directional lighting, or responding to gameplay events, all with efficient GPU performance.

(NEW) Dynamic Fake Lights

New in Lumen 2, this system creates mesh-based lights that behave like point lights without using Unity’s actual lighting system. These "lights" offer real-time flicker, movement, and fade controls with nearly zero performance cost. Ideal for large scenes, mobile builds, or stylized games where artistic lighting matters more than strict realism. Note: Lumen Fake Lights do not support shadow casting

Why Use Mesh-Based Lighting?

True volumetric lighting is beautiful, but expensive. It requires multiple depth samples, screen-space effects, and camera-based rendering that can tank performance on mid-range systems. Lumen skips all of that by using cleverly constructed, vertex-lit meshes with lightweight shaders. This means:

  • No heavy render passes
  • No reliance on post-processing
  • No large 3D textures
  • Low memory usage and GPU impact
  • Compatible with any rendering resolution
  • Consistent performance across platforms, from PC to mobile
  • Better-than-ever-before VR support battle tested for your project

Mesh-based lighting is the technique behind many modern stylized games, allowing developers to get the emotional impact of lighting without sacrificing framerate. Lumen gives you the same tools with maximum flexibility.
